Gentlemen; Started the 420w this morning and let it idle. seems to be running on one cyl, the rear one and the plug is black and sooty, the other plug is gas fouled. Checked the obvious, wires, cap etc. gapped the points. still seems like one cyl. is doing most of the work. I will be putting in new points and wires shortly. What else would you suggest I check?

if you want to do the tractor and yourself a favor, don't waste your money on points, condensor, change it over to electronic ignition. I've changed all my tractors over to Genessee ignition. Solves the plug fouling/starting problems.

I have a 430, basically a 420 with a facelift. Several years ago I had trouble with it fouling one plug, usually the front one. Would have to change plug. For a while I ran it on one cylinder but then realized it was still putting fuel into the cylinder so it was running down the cylinder into the crankcase. I overhauled the carb and problem was solved. I understand the way the manifold is built it will overfuel one cylinder sometimes. I still have a plug that will give me trouble once in a while, I got some different plugs from NAPA that helped some and sometimes I can pull the wire off and let it arc to the top of the plug, the extra resistance will break it loose. I would check points, condenser, cap, rotor and wires also. Again problem may be in the carb.

Dan; Appreciate the help! What plugs are you using? I am going to pull the carb off and clean it up. It looks like there are a few less parts on it than the four barrel on my pickup.

plugs I am using now are Autolite 437. Old ones I had in, which I probably got from JD were Autolite 216. Not sure what the different numbers mean. The guys at NAPA said the 437 seemed to work better with the unleaded gas we have today. My 430 probably also could use a valve job and rings too but the 437 plugs have been in several years. It has a loader on most of the year so probably idles more than it works, that doesn't help to keep the plugs good. If you get a carb kit from JD or maybe you could get one from NAPA or Carquest and use air and carb clener to clean passages in carb will probably help. Sood luck on it, nice little tractors when running right.

First thing to do is pitch the Champion plugs and put in some AC or Autolite.
