I have a 1952 JD B. Does anyone know how to test the coil on the inside of the distributor? Is there a way to test a normal coil?

Mark the answer is yes and no. YES u can do a simple continutiy test of the primary and secondary windings, and if either fails, the coils is definitely BAD. HOWEVER thats not usually the problem, the usual problem is they will show continuty just fine but, at heat and high voltage, there will be a high voltage insulation breakdown causign them to fail, which you need a hi pot full blown actual coil tester to detect. Be sure and see that the points and condensor are okay and operatign properly and theres no shorted wires which act like a kill switch (grounding out the points) and then I would be more apt to suspect the coil. I dotn have the actual ohm values either for a continuity test, BUT the primary is bigger wire (carries more current) and is way less in total length then the secondary, which has alot more turns to step up the voltage, and since its longer and smaller wire (carres way less current) it will show more resistance. Good Luck, Ol John T

Mark, are you talking about a Wico XD distributor coil? Why do you want to test it? To answer your question you can make some basic tests with an ohm meter but I have no idea what the values should be for the primary & secondary windings in a Wico distributor. (it is very hard to check for internal insulation breakdown without a special coil tester that also heats the coil). Is it producing a spark at all? If not then suspect the built in ballast resistor (assuming a Wico XD) as they have a habit of failing. If it is producing a spark then see what color & how far it will jump (should be blue & jump 3/16"+) Usually (but not always) a coil is either good or bad & will either work or won't produce any spark at all. I checked my old Deere manual for values on the coil in the XD & XB & can't find any. Make sure you are getting (with the key on) battery voltage to the coil & the voltage at the points varies from close to battery voltage (points open) to close to 0 volts (points closed). If not look for open circuit (no voltage) or short to ground at points or condenser (power to coil, no power to points when open), or corroded points (battery voltage at points points closed).
