I have a chance to purchase a late (console)2520 gas. It has wide front, like new rubber, fenders, dual hydralics, 3pt., ROPS, 5000 actual hours, and looks great, all for $6000. One "little" problem. When he started it, water come out of the muffler. He says head gasket, my luck says, block or head. Does anybody want to shoot me an "about figure" on the cost of a block or a head? Did the 2520 gas have any problems?

Wendell,

One of the products of combustion is water vapor. H2O. For this reason in the winter, the water vapor is visible coming from the tailpipes of all vehicles on the road. The thing is, once the exhaust system gets warm enough, all the water vapor is burned off and not visible. I would make sure that there is a problem first, but the fact would be a great item for negotiations. Here's another item, if the head is cracked, you can have it magnafluxed and repaired at the dealership. That is much less expensive than buying a new or rebuilt head for sure...

Hope this helped a little.

All the 2520's had consoles.Sounds like top
money for a good gas.

Was it water or antifreeze? It could be condensation in the muffler, or a head gasket like the guy says, or a cracked head. If it was the block, I would doubt it would leak out the muffler, but go in the crankcase instead. After the tractor has set a while, check the oil. Is it gray? that would be a sign of a major leak. If it is still good looking oil, I would not have a big problem with it. I am in MT, so the price seems pretty high to me. The water gives you good bargaining power to negotiate the price.

thanks Larry, is there an easy way to tell if the head is the problem? I'll tell you a secret, I have a 4320, 4020, 4000, and a 3020. All console, and all very nice condition, I need a 2520 to finish my collection. this 2520 is the nicest factory original appearance one I've sean in a long time. Thanks again.

It is impossible to tell if head or gasket without pulling the head as far as I know. Then you look at the gasket for evidence of leakage to a cylinder (stains, rust). then see if there is any obvious damage to the gasket that may have caused a leak. then you have to examine the head visually. It is usually easy to see a crack that is large enough to cause a major leak. they are usually around the exhaust valves or exhaust ports. May require a head shop(not the drug kind) to do a dye check or mag particle check to look for cracks. Most heads that are cracked can be repaired now days. Also take a good straight edge to it to make sure it isn't warped. Hope this helps.
