Can anyone send me an e-mail of wire diagram of the 2010? I bought it with wires torn apart. I connected the battery + ground and the coil + to the distributor. The key doesn't work and it won't fire by jumping the starter. Besides the battery cables, is there a red wire from either terminal going to the starter switch or voltage regulator? THanks

Mark:

My 1968 4020D is POSITIVE GROUND
My 1967 3020G is POSITIVE GROUND
My 1959 730D is POSITIVE GROUND
My 1954 70G is POSITIVE GROUND

I am willing to bet your 2010 is also.

If you hooked it up with NEGATIVE GROUND I would expect the symptoms you discribed. Does the braided ground strap on your tractor have a (-) or a (+) next to the terminal you attached it to?

Many, many older tractors were wired using POSITIVE GROUND which is opposite of currant general practice. I think that Deere switched when they adopted alternators and 12v diesel systems. Your 2010 is before this happened. There is another possibility too. If someone has switched your 2010 to an alternator, it is possible that you may also have hooked your battery up backwards. In that case, if you followed the "correct" wiring procedures, you would have still hooked it up backwards.

Therefore, the big question is this: does your tractor currantly have an alternator or a generator? If it has a generator, it is probably wired with positive ground. If it has been "upgraded" with an alternator, it may have been switched to Negative ground.

Jim; Were all 4020s positive ground? We had two, a 66 and a 68 and I just assumed they were negative ground. However I never did really wrench on them that much. That was Dad's department.

Im going by the illustration in my copy of OM-R41754 issue E9 (4020, 91,000-200999) which shows the ground wire coming off of a positive (+) terminal. My copy of OM-R41753-R (3020, 68,000+) has the same illustration. The ground strap comes off of the POSITIVE terminal. The 4020 battery illustration is on page 68 and the 3020 illustration is also on page page 68 of the 3020 manual. My tractors are original, having generators. My two cylinders have ALWAYS been positive ground. I am assuming that a tractor made 1961-5 would also be positive ground, unless converted. My guess would be that the late style, console model tractors were NEGATIVE ground. I have a 1976 2440 and IT is negative ground and has an alternator).

Of course, I COULD be wrong, but my manuals seem to indicate that I am correct. (I would be happy to hear otherwise it would indicate that I learned something)

Thanks Fellas, It does not have a braided strap ans it has a generator so I am leaving it + ground and on the distributor wire to the coil i will hook it to the + side. Thanks
