Still trying to figure out why this '70 3020 diesel acts like there are no batteries in it. (see post on 10/8/01. Any directions/thoughts/ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

If I were working on it I would start out with the neutral/park safety switch on the right side of the transmission behind the battery. That is after you did make sure you have good connections with the battery terminals. I have replaced a quit a few that were bad.

Thanks for the suggestions. Actually I just painted the tractor last winter and had the floor plate off. The battery cables are new (they had internal corrosion) and I'm pretty sure not much happened to the tractor (other than the lighter thing) since it last started very easily. I'll get the wiring diagram and check it out--still wondering about any fuses or breakers???

Looks like it's time for a wire by wire trace. Get an electrical manual from Kim in the "Market place" & help support this site. It will take a while but checking everything for 31 years of wear, abuse, tinkering & vibration/mouse damage will pay off in the long run. Many tractor/shed fires are wiring related.

Pull up the floor plate, and check the battery leads there. Sometimes the hot leads are held with clips, and if the insulation at the clip is worn away or corroded, you have an instant short. There is, Im sure also alot of dirt there. Check all the connections under the floor and make sure they are clean all the way to both batteries.

Cables could be corroded internally also. I went on a call once for a 3020 that had a similar problem and the ground cable was corroded internally. It looked good on the outside. Check for continuity and reststance.
