Could be a lot of different things & depends a lot on what mag you have.

If it's a Wico, there are really only two ways this can happen. One is for one of the ears of the impulse coupling to break off but that usually just makes lotsa noise when running & doesn't work right at crank speed. The more common problem (especially on Wico C's) is the rotating shaft's magnets coming into mechanical contact with the pole pieces. If the magnets rub the pole pieces hard enough & there is enough dirt & grease present the shaft will bind & lag behind the drive coupling. They'll sound exactly like they do at crank speed even while running. Usually it comes & goes. It's quiet a while & then "clicks" a while. Sort of goes in fits. Sometimes the bearing sleeve that is pressed into the housing gets loose, sometimes it's just plain dirty from too many years of service & needs a D&C (Dustin & Cleanin).

Let us know.

Andy, at less than about 250 RPM the mag impulse sprign and trip mechanism winds er up then lets it spin past the magnet so you get a sufficient spark to start at slow hand cranking speeds. Then, centrifuual force stops the wind and trip from happening and youre runnign on straight crank RPM. If that centrigugal mechanism is broke, it may keep tryign to wind and trip (click) each time which could be caused by corroded or broken trip dogs etc. Take the mag off and turn the wheel in its back and see if she is windign up and tripping over properly, then try and clean and light lube the mechanism. Be sure and get it back in time or you will be 180 off from normal. Let us know what you find and what its doing in more detail. Ol John T in Indiana

Andy, I guess I don't completly understand your problem. Are you saying the mag impulse is clicking at all engine speeds or just on starting?

Andy, any idea what type mag do you have on the tractor? Is it a Wico X or C or AP or F-M or Bosh? They all operate about the same but the actual impulse mechanism varies on the different types. If you can tell us what type of mag maybe we can help you isolate the problem.

i dont know i know its a wico but i dont know if it is a C or what i was listening closely to it and it sounds different than the impulse i figured something was loose but when i took the smaller cap off and everything looked ok then i took the rest of the cap off and it looked alright everything was clean and looked pretty new i checked the spark and the spark was great still but when its running at full throttle the exhaust notewould sound a little different so could the timing have changed at all i know the plug wires are right.

i found the problem it was the impulse drive cup that cracked in half and was rattling around in their i took the mag off the tractor and there was a little bit of metal shavings and a few peices of magnet in their the metal shavings are off the 4 screws that hold the back part together it looks like. do i need to replace the whole mag or just fix the drive cup and put it back together? and it is a wico type C

Andy, your mag impulse cup can be replaced. Make sure you get all the metal pieces out & there isn't more damage to the mag shaft, spring or pawls. See link for parts & breakdown.
