Ignition Timing

I'm probably asking the obvious, but here goes:
The magneto ignition timing on my B is set with the engine not running. Can you adjust the timing like you would a car engine minus the timing light? ie: start the engine, loosen the magneto adjustment bolt, slowly rotate the mag fore or aft to see where the engine runs best, and then tighten it back down? I haven't read anything in the manuals about ignition timing with the engine running and don't want to risk damaging anything. Thanks for your comments.

The tractor is a 1937 long frame B and I'm pretty sure the mag is original equipment. The previous owner said he rebuilt it. How do I check to see if the impulse timing is correct on a Fairbanks-Morse mag?

The Fairbanks was one of a few different replacements made fo JD's, But, if the wrong impulse is on it, the timing will be off. This was a very common mag on A.C.'s. If you want to sell it let me know.

Roy, sure you can, the only problem is with a mag there isn't an advance mechanism built in & it should really be set to perform under a load. What year B are we talking here? The other thing to do is put a paint mark on the mag & governor housing so after you experiment you can put it back where it was it doesnt work out. Just loosen the bolts enough to be able to turn the mag & rotate the top of the mag to the rear for the advance direction. On a J.D. 2 cylinder don't automatically assume the carb is good because it is somewhat adjustable or functions in one area of operation, the carb is one of the biggest complaint areas on a 2 cyl J.D. because rust forms in the inner channels & little holes to play havoc with metering.

Yes, but I got zapped by the mag. Be careful. It is alot of fun. Did you set the impulse timing on the mag?

Sorry, I just got the tractor and don't know too much about it other than the basics. How do you set the mag impulse timing? It's a Fairbanks-Morse. The tractor runs and idles rougher than normal and the carb is OK, so I'm suspecting the mag.

I bought a 43 or 44 B at auction this Fall. It had a Fairbanks Morse magneto on it. When I finally got it running, it ran, but not well. I thought a new set of points, cap and rotor might help. So, I went to my dealer, and couldn't find this mag as factory issue. No evidence in the parts books that this mag was ever factory. Maybe Clooney can tell us more, but I think it may have come off a wisconsin engine, and I just could not get it to run right. I put a Wico mag on, and set the dwell for a B, and it runs like a top now. Don't know what to do with the old mag.
