Alcohol in a 2 banger

Just wondering if anyone has ever tried to run a "real tractor" on straight ethanol. If I ever get the house done, and get moved out of this unbearable city (4000 people!) to the small farm we bought (25 acres, hay and row crop), I'll have plenty of room to set up a still. I've got a '47 "B", and am looking for another "classic" or two to work the place with. Hate to give the A-rabs, and the oil companies any more than I have to. If you've got any wisdom on the subject, it would be appreciated. Besides, if a guy gets thirsty in the field, a siphon hose and a little 7-up..... .

Thanks for the input, guys. If I ever get around to experimenting, I'll let you know what happens.

When they first starting marketing gasohol, didn't they have trouble with gaskets in the fuel systems disintegrating? Think these were mostly rubber of various sorts, but... something to think of. Seems as though there was an article a few years ago about a corn belt farmer who built a still and was running his new generation Deeres on alcohol. Wish I had kept that issue.

Maybe you should just try using it like gasohol, about 10% alcohol and 90% gas. I've never tried it, but if you go over to the pulling board I bet somebody there has.

Good luck with the still, I always wanted to try it, and I don't even drink!

It is my understanding that it is extremly difficult, if not impossible, to remove enough water out of the distilled product to make a useable fuel in a home operation. Hopefully someone else on the board will correct me if I'm wrong here.

Getting the water out is only half of the problem. To run anything close to efficient on straight alcohol, the compression ratio needs to be on the order of 10:1, or higher. Ethanol has about 1/2 of the BTU's per pound of gasoline, so you will have to do a lot of carburetor work, as the engine will need nearly twice the fuel delivered to it on alcohol. Cold-range spark plugs will be needed, and some form of heat will probably have to be put on the carburetor to keep it from icing. Alcohol is harder to ignite than gasoline, so a HOT mag or some form of electronic ignition will also be needed. Still think running on alky is a good idea?

I would say that the available torque increase from switching to alcohol would make it a worthwhile proposition. Just give her a shot of gas to get her started. Is 10:1 enough compression?

Torque? A diesel seems to lug a lot better, but alcohols do make the horsepower, or at least thats what I have noticed pulling in a couple gears over 8th.

Plus the ATF has no sense of humour. Recently they shoot first & ask questions later. When they find a alcohol stil the tax issue is added. Chemical supply houses & some automotive race fuel suppliers have ethanol, isopropyl & methanol alcohol at reasonable prices.Even nitromethane if you want to boost her a little more for pulling.
