Have you checked the float and valve in the carburetor? Our 49 B leaks a little when sitting, and drips gas out of the carb. It runs OK when started, so I haven't disassembled the carb. But I do shut it off by closing the valve on the sediment bowl, and letting it run out the gas in the carb.

Our JD A only needs a little less than a quarter throttle to start. Try not giving it so much gas when starting.

Andy, in addition to clooney's advice, as the plugs or points deteriorate, well the plugs tend to wet gas foul much easier. Try a fresh set of Autolite 3077, the deep reach side wire electrode plugs, and maybe also a fresh set of points and condensor in the mag and see how she does. Ol John T in Indiana

Andy, if it starts & runs good by using less throttle I wouldn't worry about it. All those old Deere's are a little different in their starting techniques & most on mine like very little throttle during the starting process. One thing you might look at is the oil in the air cleaner cup to see if it is too heavy or full of dirt, I know you are supposed to use the same viscosity as the engine but if you are using 40 weight in the engine try 20 or 30 weight in the air cleaner.

i replaced the oil in the air cleaner last month so it should be pretty clean still ive tried shutting the gas off when its not in use and that seems to help thanks
