My 3020 diesel (1970) acts as if the batteries are dead. When I turn the key, absolutely nothing happens--no guages, no idiot lights, no starter. The batteries are new and are charged. I don't think I've tried to start it since the cigar lighter shorted out a couple weeks ago. Is there a fuse or breaker somewhere that could be causing the problem? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the help. I'm not seeing what looks like a circuit breaker. There is a black, rectangular vinyl piece with plugs in both ends, but it shows continuity. There is a round plug that appears to be a pin type connector. I haven't done anything with the lighter--it came apart when I burned it up. It doesn't appear to have any kind of breaker or switch associated with it. Any ideas?

John, Remove your dash cowl. On the left side under the cowl there is a buss bar with circuit breakers. Look for a 12 gauge wire with a in-line fuse holder that is connected to the circuit breaker buss. This holder contain a special (slow burn) fuse that supplies power to all you key switch functions including the starting circuit. You can put a regular fuse in it to get you going but the correct fuse is available at your John Deere dealer. If this does not correct your problem check positive battery connection for the single heavy red wire that it is connected to the positive battery post clamp on the battery. The result is the same if this wire is not connected to the positive post. They deteriorate and break with age and corrosion. Being you know you had a short in the lighter I would bet you will find the slow burn fuse failed. Good Luck Dave W.

john, im not sure weather yours is like mine(1964) or not but the breaker or reset is the lighter. you need to pull that out and behind it theres a switch all you do is pull the lighter out and stick it back in and you should be ready to go.
