I can not get spark to rear cylinder.
New cap, new rotor and plug wire.
Still no fire. Please tell me what to check.

I had the same problem with my 420. Also was rear cylinder. Put on the non foulers or antifoulers. I believe thay are made by Dorman. See my post from last April quoted below.

"I use antifoulers on both my 40 and 420. They really work great. These are small extensions that go in the spark plug hole and then the spark plug goes into the extension. It creates a little chamber that is not subject to getting the oil from the cylinder. Not only does it prevent fouling, but the tractors start and run better.
Honda used a similar design on some of their engines in the past. The antifoulers are available at some full line auto parts stores for less that $3.00 each. I have had real good luck with these. My 420 would foul a set of plugs in just a few hours, now they last a good long time."

If the ignition checks out then look for a soot plugged intake or exhaust port/manifold. Or valve train problems. Compression equal on both cylinders?

what in the world does a plugged or sooted manifold have to do with no spark on the rear cylinder?

He said it was missing on the rear cylinder & if spark is jumping the gap on the rear cylinder plug then the problem would have to be in the rear cylinder. Air/fuel mixture not being dense enough due to intake restriction, being pushed out between the valves/seats or head gasket. Another possibility is the air/fuel being too contaminated with exhaust to burn.

Poor old Winderment seems a little testy today. When you wrote " can't get spark to the rear cylinder". Did that mean #1 the rear cylinder wouldn't produce power/fire #2 jump a spark across the rear plug when plug was removed #3 jump a spark from the plug wire to ground or the sparkplug external tip? Our 40 did this classic as well & it was cured by hurling the Champions into the trash & installing Autolites. The gasket was also leaking between the head & intake manifold. This leaned the mixture at idle enough the rear cylinder wouldn't run unless idle mixture was set extreme rich.

why is it every time YOU screw up you try to worm your way out of it. i have seen your answers on this site before and all you do it throw erratic answers out and try to hit something. when you mess up you try to twist things around to confuze the issue. if you look at hanks post above you will see he got it going thanks to those who know.

I spent days messing with a 430 W that did this
last spring. When I finally got around to changing
the points and condenser as a last resort,it ran
fine.It to was the rear cylinder.Don't know why,
but over the years I've taken out a lot of new
looking points and condensers, mostly napa or
farm store points, replaced them with JD's and
they run fine.

Hank, the same points condensor and coil fire for each cylinder so that leaves wires, plugs, cap, or a worn distributor shaft, so try swapping the plugs and wires around (esp the plugs one may be bad) and if still only fires one of them I agree woth my friend clooney you betetr be looking at the condition of the dist. shaft and bushing and point clearance. Good luck Ol John T

Hank, check the spark plug if you are using it to check for a spark. The plugs have a habit of fouling on the 40-420-430 & you can't see it. If that is not your problem check the distributor for lose or worn bushings as that is another problem on that tractor. (try opening the point gap a little as that will help if the bushings are worn)
