How do I tell which spark plug wire is number 1 ? What would happen if you had the 2 spark plug wires hooked up incorercttly and started the engine? Would it be likely to damage the engine? Thanks.

AW, like clooney says, number 1 is it the left and thats the top wire out of a mag if standard, but if the mag is in 180 out would be the bottom, but if not right, switchign wires makes her run. I dont know any engineerign reason why a 180 out mag with wires reversed still wouldnt run as well, but my Missourian (stuborn lol) buddy ML Aylward, whose knowledge and opinion I hold in very high regard, says they dotn run as well if reversed. Good Luck Ol John T in Indiana

The engine won't run right with the mag/ distributor 180 out because the crank on a 2 cylinder JD is made so it is not evenly spaced. One cylinder gets to top dead center earlier. This keeps the tractor from shaking itself to pieces.

Jhill, the crankshaft throws on a 2 cyl John Deere are exactly 180 deg opposite each other and as evenly spaced as any other 2 cyl 180 deg engine. Most mags fire every time the piston comes to the firing point (e.g. 30* btdc) on either cylinder on each stroke regardless if it is on the power or exhaust stroke. If the mag is out of time 180* & the wires are reversed to fire the correct plug it makes no difference unless it has a camshaft driven distributor or gear reduction mag & with those it won't even run if the mag or distributor is 180* out. The only time I can see the mag position vs. governor position making a difference is if there is enough wear on the cam & governor gears to effect the dynamic timing in one position over the other, or there is wear on only one mag cam lobe & that matches up to the weaker cylinder.

Ditto clooney too all above, thats why me and my good friend Mike Aylward (you see him on here Im sure) always have our fun argument about difference or no diffeence if mag 180 out and wires reversed Take Care Will you be going to Gatherign of Green in Moline or Expo next year ? I may be talking (a lil BS lol) at some of them john T

AWB, I presume we are talking horizontal 2 cylinder J.D..... The L/H side is #1 cylinder. If the wires are reversed it won't hurt anything it just won't start.
