I have purchased a used JD tractor. I believe it to be either a 2020 or 2030, however the serial plate is gone so I don't know the #. It has a solid non-adjustable front axle and an underneath exhaust. Four cylinder gas engine with a two stick transmission, four gears with a high, low and reverse range. I am curious if it could be an industrial version of the 2020/2030 series. Any ideas on how to tell the difference between the 2020/2030 or the industrial versions?

A 301 had a three cylinder engine. If it is yellow with a four cylinder engine with a solid non-adjustable axle it is either a 400 or a 401. Some of these early industrials as well as agriculture tractors built in Dubuque Iowa had the tractor serial number on the right side of the transmission case just below the seat and above the right foot platform. The industrial 400 or 401 had allot of commonality with the 2020.

I think that this tractor was yellow in a previous life. It has been painted green but there are a few spots where the paint is peeling and it is yellow underneath. There are two rivet posts about two inches apart on the right side of the transmission just under the seat. I believe that this is where the serial number plate was. Was the SSN # stamped anywhere else on this type tractor? Is there a specific term used to describe this type transmission(8-4 two stick)?
I have a reference book that lists the JD 400, 401 series as having a "Direct Drive" transmission, I don't know what that term would mean.

Also, this same book, the "Hot Line Farm Equipment Guide" published by Heartland Ag-Business Group lists the 2020's and 2030's as having a "Low Utility" model. Does anyone know the differences between the "Low Utility" models and the Industrial versions?

Thanks for you help!

I have just purchased a very good yellow JD 401 Diesel with loader and 2100 hrs. Yes the seriual number plate is on the right side of the tranny under the seat. I have just got an operators manual from the internet but i am looking for a SERVICE manual. This called a Shuttle Shift transmission.

I have a 401B the term direct drive means that it has a reverser...mine has 8 forward and 8 reverses.. some have a lockout on high side of trans so they only have 8 forward and 4 reverses.. my tractor is about the same as a 2440..it is 1981 model...some have serial # on right side right above front axle....have nice day

The term "Direct Drive" and now your comment about the "reverser" makes me think that a "Direct Drive" transmission is essentially a hydrostatic type. One that you can shift gears without using the clutch. Would that be a correct assumption.

If so, I think my unit may be a "low utility" version of the 2020 or 2030. You defintely have to use the clutch to shift gears. Your thoughts?

kermit, i think wah the means is that it has a shuttle shift where you can switch between forward and reverse by just pulling on a lever. thats why your able to have 8f-8r gears. we had something simmular to that on a ford we had a lever next to the steering wheel it should have a forward-neutral-and reverse. it works good for loader work cuase you dort have to clutch to go between forward and reverse. they have used this type of tranny on backhoes for quit sometime. hope this helps.
