down track in 3rd gear 9500lbs class and 4th gear in 7500 lbs classes, but I need more power seems to fall from 4000 to 3000 rpm fast what can I do for more all around horse power. any advise would be great

Definitely look into a different grind on the cam. You can take a stock cam and have a cam company help you select a new grind. One of the weakest links on these tractors is the cam. When you start making power and turning rpm's the "nose" of the cam can't handle it. At this point the cam breaks off at the front bearing. Some people sell steel nosed cams that seem to hold up a lot better (I have one if you are interested). I have a gas 4010 natural aspirated that runs in the same rpm range as you. I have found that most of the power comes from head work, cam shaft, and carb. We run lighter weight classes and pull in 6th and 7th gear with 24.5 tires. Hope this helps.

You really need a cam to use this motor at that rpm. I would also get it on a dyno and adjust timing and fuel delivery under load sometimes on a normally asperated motor the most fuel out of the injection pump is not the best

In wisconsin we use a guy that custom grinds cams and he always asks what c.i.d. and rpm lift and duration makes a diferance at high rpm

With no turbo you are at about 125-30 hp max no matter how much fuel you inject or rpms , airflow is too restricted . A 4430 intake might help , it dumps in the center and has a few less bends in it than the original 4020 , I use one on my '64 4020 but it has a Turbo also. Before I put the turbo on I put the stock 33 pump wide open and to 3000 rpm on the dyno it had 118 hp . We pull 10 & 12 stock classes , 3000 rpm limit and also 12000 120hp stock rpm which are dyno checked . In the 12,000 120hp we run 2nd gear most unless it's a hard track we run 3rd . In 3000rpm class we run 4th or 5th depending on track in 10000 class and 4th in 12000&12500 classes . I have a 37 pump head the old Bendix injectors , 4430 intake and 4640 camshaft . I've seen it at 225hp on a dyno at stock rpm . It's a Powershift trans the pressure is set up and I've had no trouble with it . I forgot to mention I have 18.4Rx38 tires . JIM

Thanks tim

tim , with the rpms you are turning you probably need a special cam grind like the others mentioned but keep in mind the valve to piston clearances unless you are already running special pistons . The stock 4020 pistons do not have valve reliefs like the stock turbo engines have . One of the guys I pull with bought a reground cam that was "supposed" to work but he ended up bending the valves . I looked at the Predator cam a couple years ago but they wouldn't sell it without the whole overhaul kit . I don't think it is too far from stock grind and is for stock rpms , they couldn't tell me much about it . The cam I'm using is a stock Deere one , we started using them when some of the guys were tearing the cam-oilpump gear off the original 4020 cam and they thought it gave them more power , after that it seemed like the 4020's that pulled the best all had the 4430 and up cams in them . But like I said before we never run over 3000 rpm so the stock grind works okay. I've thought of going non-turbo but there aren't any pulls near here we have to go 100 miles north or west , I'm in north central Illinois. By the way I love talking about pulling 4020's so keep posting I just found this site and haven't been through all of it yet . JIM

COULD YOU TELL ME EXACTLY WHAT KIND OF CAM FOR MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE, HOW MUCH TO CUT OFF PISTONS FOR VALVE CLEARANCE IF NECCESSARY, WILL THERE BE A BIG CHANGE IN PERFORMANCE, THAN RUNNING MY EXISTING PREDITAR 4430 CAM.I AM RUNNING THE HEAVIER OIL PUMP-INJECTER SHAFT THAT RUNS OFF OF CAM. TELL ME MORE TIM

This summer was the first time I pulled with my 66 4020. I didn't have a problem with power, but i lost grip easily(need better tires) I am not sure what was done to my injector pump before I bought the tractor a few years ago, but it has plenty of power. I do know that the pump is turned up almost all the way, But I don't run it any faster than 2600 rpm because I don't really want to change the settings and end up blowing the engine. I am just wondering how your tractor reacts when it is pulling hard... does it put out a lot of black smoke, or just seem to die? knowing this could help me suggest some things to do..

to Dan S whatever gear Iam in i start down the track at about 3800 to 4000rpms there is alot of black smoke and there is a very nice red flame
sticking out of the pipe about2" long, at the high rpms there is no rpm flicking the engine really runs smooth and sounds like its going to pull the sled out the gate. at about 3/4 down the track the rpms start dropping to the mid 3000s and then to the low 3000s to high 2000s. I was at a pull this summer and there was a 4020 like mine there and seemed to have a bit more rpms and held his rpms and torque better than mine did.dont get me wrong my 4020 really runs but i know ther has to be more power in ther somewhere.

sounds like you are getting plenty of fuel in, but the air is the major restrictor to the 4020. only thing I can suggest is to try some of the options given in the other responses to increase air flow into and out of the engine..

Tim,
I gotta tell ya if you can get 3rd with 38's on it don't complain. I pull mine stock, and I have to be down in 2nd in the 9,000 and 10,000 pound classes. I'd guess you are either going to have to go to a bigger pump set up along with different injectors with your head flowed, or get a turbo, along with the other items. It's just airflow, and RPM's 4,000 sounds pretty goood to me.
