I don't think I've seen this question before. The seat assembly on a tractor I recently bought stays in the fully down position. You can lift it up but will not hold. I don't think it would be shock absorber and I can't see that spring is broken. Any ideas without taking the whole seat mechanism apart to see? You can release catch and slide seat back and the short-tall adjustment lever seems to work.

There is a cable that often breaks that fastens to a recoil type spring under the seat. I rebuilt my seat completely last year including all new bushings, etc. It really isn't too hard to do.

Take off the bottom seat cushion and have a look at the mechanism. Probably something is broke or just excessively worn. It should be obvious once the seat is off.
