the main symptom would be clutch slippage in any gear, however, the clutch is engaged with hydraulic pressure.the lack of pressure may cause clutch slippage.a shop manual will tell you how to check the pressure. On the left side of the tractor under the cab there is a hyd.valve housing.in this housing there will be a port that has clutch cast into it.install a 200 psi gauge and check pressure with engine running at 1700rpm.check with two speed lever in low and high position.you should maintain 145 psi.if 145psi is present in low range but drops off in high range ,you have a leak in the two speed planetary trans.hope this helps

What concerns me is that there is very little pedal movement between fully out and fully engaged. There isn't any slippage once engaged.

There's a spring in the clutch valve that breaks & causes the clutch to be too aggressive-actually there's 2 springs, only the short one seems to ever break-all 30 & 40 series Quads had this problem on a fairly regular basis.
