4020 Powershift trans won't go out of park

When I put my 65 4020D powershift transmission in gear it will not automatically disengage from park. The previous owner rigged it so all I have to do is pull a wire (coat hanger) that is attached to one of the levers on the shift arm under the housing. He said there was a spring missing in/around the transmission that was a pain to replace so it was never replaced. However, if I dont have to totally dismantle the tractor I would like to fix it so when I put it in gear it also goes out of park. Does anyone know how to replace this spring and how difficult it is. Thanks in advance.

Had the same problem on a 3020 p.s. WTW is right on the mark. Don't screw around and just get it to work. Fix it properly. There is no true neutral in a powershift trans. All there is is hydraulic ports that are either on or off.

Phil, Let me clear the air on some things that are being said before you get into a bigger problem than you already have. First if your 4020 is a 1965 model it does not have the wind up spring down on the side of the transmission park control arm that was referred to. Second if the tractor will come out of park by pulling the control arm linkage under the dash with a wire as I interpreted you to say, your problem is not in the transmission. There is a (PULL) spring involved with the control linkage on a 1965 model that is under the dash between the control lever and park cable. It is there to load the cable in event when the tractor is put in park that if the park teeth do not line up it will stretch and pull the park into its latch mode if the tractor was to creep in either direction. For this spring and function of the park operation to work correctly the park cable should have NO excess drag on it or it will not work correctly. On later model 4020 this (PULL) spring was replaced with the windup spring that was previously referred to. I did not take that your problem was getting it into park rather it was getting it out of park? If this is correct your problem is wear with in the shift control lever and associated parts under the dash not your spring.. When taking the tractor out of park the lever should mechanically force the control cable to turn the arm on the side of the transmission. Rebuild the shift lever control mechanism under the dash and make a safe tractor before someone gets hurt. Good Luck Dave W.

Dave,

It sounds like you interpreted my problem
correctly, it will not go out of park
automatically. How difficult is it to rebuilt the
shift mechanism and does JD sell a kit to do it.

I do have another question though, you said
to rebuild it to have a safe tractor before
someone gets hurt. What am I overlooking, where
is the danger in what I have, the tractor goes
into park when I put it in. I'm not second
guessing you I just want to understand how it works.

Phil, It is not that bad of a job if you have snap ring pliers and a busing driver set. The area of concern is a part that is located right in the center of the shift lever and the lever itself. When the lever is in the side to side center position between the forward and reveres slots there is an ear on this part and another on the lever that line up only in this center position. These ears contact each other when you are coming out of park. What happens is the ears get worn along with every thing else and they do not contact each other to force the park cable back (down) to the released position when moving the lever from park position. It is kind of hard to explain but if you take it apart slowly and study it you will see what I am referring to. The reason I made the safe remark is sometime people will try to adjust the cable linkage to correct this problem only to create another in which in this case may affect getting the tractor into park all the way. So fix the worn areas before you make your final adjustments. The thing to remember when looking at the mechanism, is when the lever is being raised up to bring the tractor out of park, the lever will be in direct mechanical contact with the arm which the park cable is connected to, forcing the arm down to release the park. My bet is that the lever is not forcing the arm down far enough due to wear on two parts. See What you learn and let us know. Good Luck Dave W.

the cable runs from the shift lever down to the right side of the tractor, under the platform, behind the battery and to the park lever.behind the lever there is a coiled spring.if this spring is broken, this problem will occur.the lever and spring are held in place by a roll pin.if the spring isnt broken and the pin is in place, then it could be a stuck cable

The linkages sound like they are worn or dirty. The powershift on my brothers 4020 gets dirty and it wont go into park. It almost killed me last year. I tried adjusting it but it just took out 8th and 7th gear. It would probably help if you got a service manual. We had to get a mechanic too fix my adjustment and clean the linkage.

The spring on the outside of the case is a bit tricky to replace but by no means impossible, If the problem is internal then you can remove the transmission top cover and have a look into the transmission case. It sounds like you might need an outer spring, park cable, and a little adjustment. There is also a chance that you might need to rebuild the shifter quadrant to remove unwanted slop.
