I've just brought a 'new' 39 BO home. Because I'm an Amateur in this 'sport', I have several questions about situations that I would appeciate some help and knowledge with.

1. The clutch will not "snap" into engagement. It just lays there, pretty sloppy and lose. I started to adjust the 3 nuts but discovered that one of the bolts has been broken off (it looks as though about 1/2 inch is gone.) Other than replacing the short clutch bolt, can anyone tell me what would cause the clutch to not snap into the engagement position?

2. The BO has got individual brakes with a 'pipe plug' on the top of each brake for lubrication. About 2 or 3 inches in from the brakes, on the transmission (?) case are two more 'pipe plugs' (one on each side of the case). I have looked in the manual and parts manual and can find no mention of them. Can anyone tell me what these pipe plugs are?

3. This BO has got the B694R cast wheels on it. It looks as though all of the retaining bolts are good, but it also looks as though someone has welded a couple of beads around the inside of one of the wheels to keep the cast wheel on the the shaft. Any ideas what the purpose might have been. Because I'm going to have to remove the wheels to do any work on the pulley and flywheel, I'm going to have to get these wheels off.

4. And the last question, at least for tonight, is when the BO is running, the prettiest lines of oil originate (streak) from the flywheel shaft and flow/shoot outward to the outer rim of the flywheel. It also has quite an oil drip from the flywheel after it has run for awhile. Any suggestions here would also be appreciate.

I'm sure these are pretty basic questions..but I'm learning and having quite abit of fun in the process. Thanks for all of your insight.

On the question 2 about the pipe plugs, I wonder if you are referring to the square bolts that are actually where the brakes are adjusted for lining wear. These are turned into the brake housing to tighten the brake up. Lubrication for the brake should be a little oil port on the top side like ones at the end of a generator. Question 3 was interesting because I have a 39 B with something that sounds like what you have. They took rebar and welded it all the way around the rim on the inside of the rim 3 or so inches from the cast. I was wondering if that rim was intended to be a split rim of some kind. The rims are too rotted to figure it out anymore on mine. Hope this helps a little.

Larry, (1)- the usual cause of the clutch not snapping is wear on the "dogs", "toggles" or "3 holes in the operating sleeve" or all of the above that prevent the toggles from going over center. If the clutch adjustment is way out of adjustment due to that broken bolt maybe a new bolt & adjustment is all you need. You will have to remove the clutch pulley to install that bolt so an inspection of the dogs, toggles & operating sleeve at that time might reveal something else.
(2)- you will have to be a little more specific on the location & size of those pipe plugs as I don't recall those plugs.
(3)-exactly where on the wheel or axle is the weld?
(4)-you have a leaking flywheel spacer seal (cork "o" ring)..the flywheel will have to be removed, then the cover under it, then the flywheel spacer to install a new cork seal.(when you do that job make sure you mark the flywheel to crankshaft before removal & line the tang on the flywheel up with the slot in the spacer at re-assembly, then set the crankshaft end play to .005-.010". Post back for more info when you start that job.
