I noticed that the shifting shaft on my 52 B doesn't slide all the way over to the detent when in the neutral position. By looking into the case (under the steering post) it would appear that something must be amiss with the fork or gears under the 4/6 gear cover right behind the flywheel. Before I tear into this, anyone got any suggestions as to what might be wrong? Is there something on the clutch side of the 4/6 shifting shaft that could be keeping it from moving all the way to the neutral detent? I don't see too much in the part's catalog that could cause this, except a bent shifting fork. Does this happen? Also, do I need to remove the flywheel to get the fourth/sixth gear cover off?
Thanks!

Bob, it could be as simple as the set screw that holds the 4-6 shift gate to the shifter shaft has come loose or slipped. I haven't pulled the 4-6 gear cover off a late B with the flywheel on in a long time so can't be sure, but I believe the flywheel will have to be loosened & moved out some to get the cover off, try without moving it first but I think it will have to be moved some.

Clooney, I checked the screw on the shifter gate, and it was tight. The screw has a little pin on the end of it that fits into a hole on the shaft, so it can't be adjusted a bit to one side or the other. Guess I'll probably have a look under the cover tomorrow after church.

you can remove the cover without removing the flywheel, however you have to slid the flywheel considerably and be careful not let it slip off. Just did this on a 530.
