Someone asked me what it would cost me to replace my 720D with a new tractor. So if I had to, (and could afford to), what model JD would I get to replace my 720 and what would it cost me? I know I could ask the salesman at the local dealership the next time I'm there, but I don't want to get his hopes up for nothing.

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen. I looked in Deere's website and found a 2WD 5420 that can be equipped with 15.5-38s and enough weight to get it close to a 720. It's has more horsepower (65) but I didn't find anything closer overall. List's for about 28,000. I'm sure it's a nice tractor, but I believe I'd just as soon keep what I've got.

I like the little 5000 series tractors.. but the trany would never hold up to the plowing work that the 720 did..

Keep the 720D. There is nothing on the market that will replace it. That old 720 will still be cranking out horsepower long after the new one is rusting in the junkpile.

Asking the salesman is still a good idea - just tell him why you're curious. One problem might be that most sales people these days may have never heard of a 720D. You might tell them that it is about a 50 horsepower tractor that pulls a 5 bottom plow. Then, in these days of minimum tillage, explain what a 5 bottom plow is.

I don't have the numbers in my head, but I'd guess that the 5000 Ten series of tractors should be in that horsepower range. Whether they will do the work that a 720D will is another question.

A little more info - go to www.deere.com and look in the Equipment Quick Find section. Do some surfing there and find what you're looking for.

A brochure I have says that a 5310 is 53 horsepower. Again, I'm not sure horsepower rating tells you much about how they will pull. My '41 B is about 18 horsepower. My JD LX 178 Lawn Tractor is 15 horsepower. Which one do you think will pull a bigger plow?

The 730 Diesel was the follow up model to the 720. The 730 came out in Oct 58 along with the rest of the 30 series. I believe improvements were mostly cosmetic over the 20 series. The 730 was produced in the U.S. until 60 when the tooling was sent to South America were production lasted until the early 70's.

No, I think he is asking, what "NEW" tractor would replace his 720 D. Sorry but I don't know.

I think that is exactly what he wants to know. The problem is that the smallest tractor, built as a field tractor and not a utility tractor is a 7210. I think, but am not quite sure, that a 7210 is about 90-95 hp. Since the 720, when built, was the largest, row crop tractor Deere built (the 820 WAS bigger, but is not a row crop), you would have to compare a 720 to a 7810. The 8000 series are really more like the 820, although you can use them as comparisons---the distinction between row crop and standard dissapeared 25 years ago.

I feel that the progression of models after the 720, and I am listing tractors built to do the exact same job, were:
730
4010
4020
4320
4430
4440
4450
4455
7800
7810

I feel that most of the "bigger" tractors were more like the 820, used for mostly very heavy tillage. My "progression" of succeding models for the 820:
830
5010
5020
6030
4840
4850
4955
4960
8400
8410
8520

A modern tractor, that is in fact the same size, or will at least attempt to do the work of a 60 hp tractor, would need to be a 6310 or a 6410.

JMHO,

You're absolutely right! I wasn't thinking of a "real" field-type tractor, I just looked at horsepower. Do they even make a 5 bottom plow for modern-day tractors? If so, what tractors are they designed for?

Stan (gone from the farm for a long time)
