Grew up at a JD dealership, there is a pto seal, check for wear on shaft, bushing or what ever caused the seal to fail, may be more than old age. The easiest way we found to set the valves on this engine was to get the cylinder at T.D.C. loosen the valve adj. screw, leave the feeler gauge in the tool box, very carefully(with fingers only) tighten the adjustment till there is no slack or free play in rocker arms, works best to be shaking the rocker arm as you do this to feel all the movement, or lack of it, then carefully loosen it three(3) flats of the nut, then locked it down there, this eliminated the problem with rocker arm wear, and was very close to the reccomended clearence, which i think was .020, been a few years now (1961) since i left JD service work. We repaired hundreds of them and never had a problem with this method, was much simpler than trying to set with a feeler gauge. Gene Davis

Yes there is a oil seal on the P.T.O. shaft. Part number AA 2296 R.
