I know this is a highly contraversal subject, but I found a fair amount of sludge in the bottom of my 38 A when cleaning the oil pump screen and pan area. I just got this tractor and have no idea if it had detergent oil in it or not, but from the looks of the sludge I would say it has had non-detergent oil in it. I flushed the sludge from the pan, and now I would like to run a good quality detergent oil in this old girl, but do I take the chance that it might plug up some valuable oil holes and then "Bang" - "that's all she wrote"".
Or should I play it safe and go with non-detergent oil. If I went with detergent I would probably change the oil very often at first.
What do you guys think? Thank you in advance for your comments on this. And thank you very much guys for the info from my previous post.

Why-Me, clean it out the best you can then use a good quality 30 or 40 weight detergent oil. Change the oil & filter after about 4 hours of running then depending on the amount of junk in the oil & filter make a determination on when the next change should take place. If you keep the filter from plugging it won't plug any oil passages of do other damage to the oil system & will improve the oiling system in the long run. You might want to install a new filter between oil changes & cut the removed one open & see what it is catching.

There have been hundreds of posts here, both pro and con. I had my tractor running before I tore it apart. I've had all the oil lines off, flushed and blown out, the head off, valves done, gov off, cleaned out the oil pump, filter, and case, etc.. So, after removing about 10 lbs of sludge, corn, nuts, ball bearings and what have you, I'm gambling that the small amount of dirt suspended in detergent oil won't do further damage. Only time will tell.
