I put the mag on and checked everything, turned on the gas and pulled the choke, throttle open a little, and hit the starter. Had a good 30 second run. Hit the starter again, started, choke in, runaway engine. that is what started this. Pulled the throttle all the way back and it gradually died. The carb has been rebuilt twice, once by me and last by a JD dealer. Now it wont start again. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. (Clooney and John T I really appreciate your help and patience in this). Bob

Bob---I had a similiar problem with my " G " what I did was I installed the govoner weight lever in the wrong position. It looks as if it should go in slot on govenor slide, but it don't it goes behind the slide, boy was that sucker hard to handle, made some of my best pulls this way, before I figured out whaat I did wrong, also Clooney pointed out in one of his earlier post, about adjusting carb to govenor throttle rod be adjusted to 1/2 a hole this adjustment is real critical. You said the carb had been gone through but double check the plate in the venturi to make sure it is in correctly and not binding. Had this happen on my "G" puller and was an easy fix that only cost a small amount of embarrassment. Hope this helps.

Bob, I suggest you see if it will run with the throttle disconnected from the governor but so you can be sure and control it to see if its a governor or carb or ignition problem. As Clooney said, see if you got a good spark first and if so the carb has fuel to and fills the bowl and if it runs, tehn check all teh throttle and governor shafts for clearance and see if the governor makes her run away again as before and post back. Bob, you are going to have to get it started again to see if the governor is functioning. Probably the first thing to check is that the mag is turning, if that is ok check for fuel in the carb & that you are getting spark from the mag. One cause of a hanging throttle is the rod that goes into the lever on top of the carb will hang on the carb top or the cotter pin (that should be able to be seen & felt with hand operation of the throttle rod at the carb). Operate the governor lever by hand & see if you can feel the inner fly weights move in the last part of the travel. If you can't find anything obvious you will probably have to pull the end cover on the governor to take a look inside.

It's been a L-O-N-G time since I had an A governor apart, but one thing I remember is that you had to make certain you had the governor arm (the one that is on top, with the flat spring steel arm that hooks to the carb thru a rod) properly installed with regard to the governor shaft. I can't remember which way, but it goes something like hold the shaft full counter clockwise and install arm, or hold it full counter-clockwise, and install gov. arm. I know if it's on out of position, it will either not open fully, or be open fully at any position. (Voice of experience speaking here !).
