I finally got time to put the Gov. back togather, My question now is was it normal for the side plate to be so hard to push in the last 1/8 inch or so? at first it was like it was against a spring, I rocked the fan a little, then pushed and it slid up to an 1/8 or so, then with a hard push, not a hit, it sort of snapped into place. It was dark by then so quit and will do the Mag and timing tonight if no rain. Two weeks and the new building is up. Will have a heated shop for the winter.

Yep, I did have the Mag off, I had the flywheel set and found that luckily I had the marks (V) on the gears showing when I took the cover plate off. Might be that was because the flywheel was set?? Since I had throughly cleaned it while installing the new bearing's, I lubed it good and put a small amount of grease on the ball bearings to get them started. I made sure all the oil holes were open and vent holes too. I will be lining up and timing this evening I hope, have to get some other things done and will be out of town overnight and tomorrow. Just have to retire so I can spend more quality time in the new shop. Thanks again for the help. Bob

I'm new to this, so I have very little idea what I'm doing, but I just went through the same procedure. Mine snapped in, I had not removed the mag, and I turned the flywheel over a couple of times to see what was happening. About 30 seconds later, there was another snap on the opposite side - the mag housing broke off at the bottom. If I did it again, I'd loosen or take off the mag before I tightened the end cap. Good luck.

Bob, there is a spring (big spring) on the R/H bearing race to keep the bearings in tension & keep a preload on the governor bearings. The first hang-up you encountered was probably the fan gear mesh then the last push overcame the spring pressure. As John said make sure you have some backlash in the fan shaft to gov gear or it will howl like a siren. The snap might have been the re-engagment of the mag if it wasn't removed or the fan gear meshing.

Bob, I assume you understand that the proper backlash and bevel gears (fan shaft to governor) alignment is set by adding or removign the different thickness of gaskets BOTH at the fanshaft (where it goes into governor) and on the governors side bearing cap/cover. If that alignment and backlash is incorrect, you will have a whine form mis meshed bevel gears. Did you set your governor shaft such that when the number one piston is at TDC on its power stroke, the female mag drive slot on the governor shaft (side opposite that end bearing cap you mentioned) is horizontal ?? The snap is sound you described sounds like the bearing (outer race) was seatign in or the gears meshed and is probably okay. Good luck Ol John T
