Gasket treatment...

I'm going to start putting my 46 "A" back together tomorrow, and I was wondering...

I've read differing opinions on what to do with gaskets before putting them on. Some say to soak them in water, others (including the I&T manual) say to soak them in oil. What do you guys find works best?

How about using silicone on both sides of the gasket and putting it on dry?

Any advice appreciated...

Chris

Depends on what type of gsket you are talking about. The new head gaskets dont need soaking in oil or really any kind of sealant. Some people use aluminum or copper paint as a sealant on head gaskets. I use a little gun grease, because that is what my Dad did. If your surfaces are clean and smooth, you should not need any kind of sealant on any gasket. For cork, I use absolutely nothing, and don't over tighten cork gaskets. paper gaskets where surfaces are not so smooth, I use a little silicon caulking. White lead is an old pipe sealing compound which was like real thick white paint. For pipe threads, I use either teflon tape, or teflon pipe thread sealing paste.
