Anyone with a Model G parts manual? Are pistons with part number A 1297 in the book?

They measure 5.90 inches across the top, have 4 rings above the pin and one below. Stamped on top is .045 and also 18G .
Question is: are these pistons for a G ?

Tom, this is not a complete John Deere part number. It should have an "R" after it, and if it were for a "G" it would have an "F" prefix instead of an "A". Where is the part number located on the piston? Most John Deere pistons have the part number on the piston skirt on the inside. This sounds like an M&W or some aftermarket part number, and with that bore size it sounds like it is for a 70. Very often their part numbers are near the wrist pin on the side of the piston. Hope this helps. Mike

Mike,

You're no doubt right. After looking a little further I found the 5-7/8" bore listed for the 70. I would certainly have had trouble telling the difference between 5.875 and 5.90 if I had been doing the measuring.

I'm the kind of guy who measures with a micrometer, marks with a chalk and cuts with an axe.

I think the .045 on the top indicates that these pistons are .045" oversize. At least that's what I found out when I took the pistons out of my '41 B (after I had bought a set of standard-size rings).

According to "John Deere Tractors and Equipment, Volume One" by Don MacMillan, all the G engines had a bore of 6" or more.

The standard bore on all the model A variations, the 60 and the 620/630 series was 5-1/2". Maybe the pistons in question here are for one of those tractors?

Just a thought, but you might ask for info from a parts catalog for one of those tractors.

Good luck,

Stan

A1297R isn't in either my styled or unstyled model G parts books.
