This tractor sat for 3 or 4 years. In trying to get it running again, the following is known: installed rebuilt carb from Sharpe's salvage, mag has been bench tested and is good, new plugs and wires, carb is getting air and fuel and is set to factory specs, valves are all free, compression is 80+ on each side.

It will only pop once in a while and will backfire occasionally. The mag is installed the same as it was before (not 180 out), but I guess its possible that the timing is off. I plan to replace the existing champions with autolite 388's and am considering exposing the flywheel to check timing. I had not done this because I know the tractor was running fine before sitting, so I dont see how the timing could have gotten off.

Any other suggestions or ideas? Would pull-starting have any better shot at getting it to fire up?

This is a little work, but you can diagnose your problem. Pull the flywheel cover off. Pull both plugs. Simply hold your finger over the #1 spark plug hole, the one on left if you sitting on the tractor. As compression is being maximized you should have spark. You can rotate the mag if the spark is off 180 or you could cross the wire. I would say your mag is out 180. Would not suggest jocking tractor around as it should start by cranking.

Greg. Its possible that the mag was 180 off and who ever put the mag on just switched the spark plug wires so try switchen them now. if every thing is right the top wire on the mag goes to the left plug Good luck RED

Greg,

I am assuming that you have put fresh fuel in the tractor.
I would definetly set the timing, just in case something happened when the mag was put back on.
I would definetly change the plugs also.
I would be tempted to try and pull start it, just to see what happens, but I wouldn't yank it around all day if it didn't start right away.
Are the plugs wet, are you flooding it? My "B" doesn't need or like much choke. This is all I can suggest, but I am sure more reliable help is on the way.
Good luck, let us know how you make out.

Better than pulling it, get a flat drive belt and another tractor with a belt pulley. This way you can monkey with it as it turns over. Woks well for me, hope you get it running as they are great little tractors. PS don't forget a twist in the belt so everything turns forward.
