420T won't start

I bought a 420T a few days ago and it started and ran fine when I got it. Last night, I used to it pull a wagon load of hay a few miles and it ran fine for that too. After I got the hay unloaded, I had the tractor sitting there idling when it died and hasn't started since. I talked to a local mechanic today and he said he thought the battery must be shot. Does this make sense? It turns over, but the battery is starting to get a little weak. The other odd thing: The positive terminal was grounded to the frame of the tractor and the negative was connected to electrical system. Is that right? 6V system, by the way. Thanks for your help.

Jason:

I have a 1954 #60 that has done the same thing. It is true that the positive is grounded and the negative acts as the positive. Who knows why. I have replaced everything electrical on my tractor and it still won't start. The problem is from the battery to the ignition switch. I am not getting any power. I am still working on it.

Try this. Fun a wire about 14 gauge from the negative connection on your batters to the the positive on the coil. If the tractor starts, then you have the same problem I do. If you figure out what it is let me know. But as I stated my probem is getting power from the battery to the ignition. I cannot find that power source.

Mark, if he runs a wire from the battery powered post to the coil positive terminal he will fry the points as the positive terminal on the coil is the one going to the points on a positive ground system. Remember on a positive ground system coil (+) to points & on a negitive ground system coil (-) to points. On your 60 the ignition switch gets it's power from the ammeter (generator post side)

Clooney:

Thanks for the info in the power to the ignition switch. I did have the coil backwards, and will try it the other way. My ammeter does not register when the ignition is on or when the tractor is running by my jury rig. Does that mean the ammeter is out, or is it the wire running from the generator to the back of the ignition switch that is not working. That wire does shows continuity

I keep thinking there should be a wire from the battery to either the ignition switch or the generator, but cannot find one. I have ordered a wiring manuel and will get it in about a week.

Thank a lot for your help.

Jason, if it turns over but doesnt start, its not a shot battery as the mechanic said. Its true a weak battery, especially on a 6 volt system, delivers a pretty weak spark if battery is low, but generally if she craNKS over but wont start its not a battery problem. Do as Clooney said to determine if its not gettign fuel or not gettign spark. Place a test lamp on the high side of the coil (side opposite one that goes to distributor) and turn the ignition on, and it should lite up and stay lit, while the low side should go on and off as the points close and open. U can also take the coil wire off the coil and see if it sparks to ground wehn the engine is turned over. If u got good spark, tehn u got to see if the carb bowl is filling. Good luck Ol John T

Jason, the positive is supposed to be grounded on a 420. As for the starting you will have to check to see if it has gasoline to the carb (pull the fuel line loose & see if you have a good flow of gasoline), then check for a nice blue spark to the spark plugs. If no fuel, check for a restriction in the fuel line, tank fitting or strainer. If no spark, check for closed up points, coil wire disconnected, loose parts in the distributor or no power to the coil (the ignition switches have been known to go bad on the 420's). It wouldn't hurt to install new spark plugs as the 420 is known for fouling those also (especially at idle).

Interesting comment on the 420 fouling plugs. Mine used to. They would last hardly any time and it would start hard. I installed antifoulers and problem disapeared. They work like a seperate ignition chamber, screw into the spark plug hole and the plug screws into them. This is just like some of the new lean burn automobile engines. The cost is under @2.00 at most local auto supply stores.

Sure enough, it was a bad ignition switch. Thanks for your help.
