Now that I've got a "new" case, I was wondering:

The folks I bought the case from kept the serial number tag from it because the tractor it came from was a wide front. They reasoned (rightly so, I think) that the number should go with the tractor that ends up with the wide front end to preserve collectible value.

Now, the case (being the largest part of the tractor) would seem to be the part of the tractor that identifies it, and that's probably why JD put the serial # on it, right?

So is there any ethical problem with putting the serial number from my bad-order case onto the new one? I've got no choice, really, and it would seem that since all the guts are from old 577263, it should keep it's name....

Just an ethical question I guess.

I have obtained the proper ser # tag rivets and everything, but still plan to keep good records of where the replacement case came from-

Makes sense to me. I don't see any chance for deception or misrepresentation.

I dunno... taking the tag off of a case to "preserve" the collectibility of the wide front??? Some days I wonder. It's nice that the old tractors are worth a little cash, but I collect/build because I like them... Having the serial number is great for getting the right parts, but too many collecters get wrapped around the axel about the tag.

My two cents...
