Well it appears that I need to rebuild the top or front half of my engine. As I have never rebuilt anything before, will my basic tools be enough or will I need some specialty gear? One cylinder is about 50% the other a little better (dry tested). Can I buy a kit that has all the gaskets, rings, pistons, valves ect. that will be needed? Or should I take my parts book to the local Deere dealer.I know the sizes will be determined by the amount of machine work that is needed, if any. Any idea on a ball park cost? I just got started in this hobby, If I'm sounding a little GREEN.

I just rebuilt my 38 B with the help of several "experts". This was my first two-cylinder restoration and I couldn't have done it without these retired guys giving me good advice. All the parts books and manuals in the world can't explain it like an experienced mechanic can. Bryani's advice of getting to know some two-cylinder guys in your area is right on and will prove invaluable in the days ahead. Good luck.

A good place to find out information would be to join a two-cylinder club in your area, these guys are experienced and would be a great source of information. I'm also from Michigan, send me an e-mail and I'll set you up with the club nearest you.

Tom, I'd tear it all down first and determine what you will need. I just redid a "B", and ended up buying just the individual parts that I needed (gasket kit, one valve, rings). I'm not sure if there is a single kit that contains everything. I was quite suprised that I could still get most of this stuff through the JD dealer, although there are lots of aftermarket vendors selling the stuff also. And feel free to use this board for info. The "B" I have was my first green tractor, and I got lots of good info from the folks on this board. Have fun with it!

Tom you can buy some aftermarket parts for the B from NAPA and Central Farm and Family. I buy from my dealer when parts are avalible. For the original parts seem to be better. By the way seeing that you are located in Mich. Contact Todd Graham, in Clare Mich, at 1-800-472-3337 and check with him for parts. He is a nice guy and will help you in any way he can.
