I just replaced the hydraulic load control spring steel shaft and seals due to a leak. Now the rockshaft will lift only with the selector in the D (depth) position. I have adujusted the cable and the adjusting screw. The rockshaft will lift about 5 inches in the L-D position. The lift will work with the selector lever in any position when I diconnect the cable from the control lever on the valve housing and move the lever forward as far as it will go.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Lynn

Thanks for the reply!
When we replaced the shaft we used some force on the first attempt. We took the shaft back out and on the second try it went in easy, after moving the selector lever.

I suspect you are correct on the problem with the slide and pin. What is the fix if that is the problem?
Can I check this by removing the seat and the rockshaft cover? Would it be easier to remove the shaft? As you can probably tell I have very little experience with John Deere tractors.
Thanks again.
Lynn

It would help to know the year of the tractor. Depending on the age of the tractor it may not have the pin and sliding wedge. I would suspect the roller is off the cam follower.

Thanks
You are correct, the tractor is a 1966 model with syncro trans. The problem with the lift existed before I adjusted the cable.
I will try to determineif the roller is the problem.

Just read your first post again, you said you adjusted the cable, if the tractor has a cable this means it is pre 1969 and does not have the pin and wedge. This is more reason to suspect the roller is out of place. Also, the older valve linkage uses two small sector gears and a small pinion gear to rotate the shaft that opens the valves. Sometimes with the cable disconnected, it is possible to move the leaver far enough for the outer sector to disengage the pinion, and when the leaver is moved back it can engage the wrong tooth and put the leaver in the wrong place to work.

I agree with Dave that you may have knocked that pin and slide off of the load control arm. When you replace that shaft, first place the control lever in the down position and the load selector lever in the minimun or "D" position. If this is not done, there will be a misalignment at the bottom end of the load control arm. It would then be possible to get the shaft in behind the load control arm and take some force to do so. However, if this occurs, the three point will not raise in any position. Since you say that the rockshaft raises in the depth position but not in the load position, first, make sure to adjust the load control arm (through the "bung hole" at the rear of the transmission case) with the load selector lever in the max or L position and the rear edge of the control lever even with the 0 mark on late models or front edge of the lever on early models. If you can't get it by adjustment, then take your shaft back out and inspect the lower end of the load control arm for damage.
Good luck!

did you use any force to insert the new shaft?
you may have ripped the slide and pin from the bottom of the load control arm. david
