This unit has been parked for a couple of years. The main clutch was working fine when it was stored. Now when I depress the clutch the fingers release but the clutch does not disengage. I believe the plates are rusted together. I need sugestions for loosening them and then preventing this from happening again. The steering clutches also do this.

Thanks for the advice. I had thought of towing it but was not sure if this would cause any damage. One of my steering clutches had previously stuck and I had taken it apart (lots of work). I did find that it required both new brake band and throwout bearing so the effort was worth while.

This is a common problem. If you have an access cover where you can see the clutch plates, you may be able to separate the clutch plate from the pressure plate by inserting a screw driver between the two and prying them apart. If not, it will probably require splitting the tractor.

My manual states that the clutch pedal should be depressed and clamped down if the tractor will sit idle for extended periods of time. I use a small pair of vise grips. The former owner of my tractor did not do that and my PTO clutch is stuck. Fortunately the drive clutch is OK and I can work around the PTO clutch.

If you have something big enough to push start it and drive it around for a good while with clutches released the heat and vibration might free them you can also spray some pentrating oil on them frist although this isn't good on the clutch disk. Also you can let the loader or blade drag to make it pull harder. good luck
