I have low oil pressure (new JD gauge) on my 35 B. I adjusted the screw on the governor "in" clockwise but still cannot get the pressure much above the "L". I just did a head job on it and it cranks and runs good. Should I try replacing the oil pump? If so, is this a tough job? I have a technical manual. I flushed out the crankcase and have fresh 30w oil in it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

RICK,
HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY JD40. HAVE WORKED THE CRAP OUT OF IT AND NOTICED MY OIL PRESSURE NEEDLE WAS NOT STAYING IN THE GREEN.WHERE ITS SUPPOSED TO BE,SO I CHANGED OIL. WAS USING 10W 30
OIL SINCE THATS WHAT WAS IN IT WHEN I GOT THE TRACTOR FROM MY DAD. CHANGED TO A 20 WEIGHT OIL
WHICH IS WHAT THE MANUAL CALLS FOR. THIS CORRECTED THE PROBLEM UNTIL THE TRACTOR GETS REALLY WARMED UP
AND THEN THE OIL PRESSURE DROPS OUT OF THE GREEN WHEN THE TRACTOR IS AT IDLE. SO MY DEDUCTION IS THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE OIL PUMP, WHICH I AM TRYING TO PUT OFF.

Had an A that had 4 gaskets in the groove where the oil filter hooks up so dont forget to check that too

Rick I am in the process of finishing up a nightmare on a B that I have, I had little or no oil pressure and found that some dummy had tightened the filter stud so tight that they had broken the filter housing where the stud was threaded into the housing. The only way to see it was to take the cover off the crankcase and look at the housing while spinning it over with the battery(BE CAREFUL) and see the oil squirting out of the housing. I welded the broken housing back togther and retapped the stud hole and all is now well I THINK.

Rick, first make sure there isn't crud & goo built up around the pump intake screen, if that is ok then you will have to explore where the oil pressure is going. You could easily have a worn oil pump, loose bearings, a broken or not hooked up oil line inside the crankcase, or a leaking oil filter head to oil filter can (common on old J.D.s that have EVER had the oil filter cover overtightened). If the stud in the oil filter can is crooked or not centered that is a sign the filter head to filter can is probably leaking. If the oil pump cover gasket was replaced with a homemade gasket at one time you could be loosing pressure there also as that gasket thickness is critical. Before doing too much, make sure the oil isn't diluted with gasoline as that will lower oil pressure also.

The oil pump screen is clear of goo and crud etc. as I washed out the crankcase with gasoline and reach in to make sure the screen was clean. I checked the oil line connections inside the crankcase and didn't find any that appeared to be loose. I will recheck. I am unsure about the leaking oil filter head to oil filter cover. The oil filter bottom isn't leaking. I converted it to use the paper element filter. The only parts inside the oil filter housing are the outlet assembly #AA2096R, the filter, and the bottom with O Ring gasket. The stud is not perfectly centered. If that is the problem how do I fix this? There are no visible leaks outside the case that I can find. Thanks for the possible causes and would appreciate any more input.

Rick, the leak would be inside the crankcase if the filter head to filter can was leaking. That stud not being centered bothers me as that is usually a sign the filter cover was overtightend. The leak would be between the top of the filter can (the housing that the element goes in) & the block that bolts to the top of the can inside the crankcase. You might be able to drain the crankcase & just put back in enough 10-Wieght oil to allow the pump to pump oil, then hand crank it & watch the gasket area between the top of the filter can & the block on top of it. Use thin oil or oil + kerosene as the hotter or thinner the oil the more apt you are to see it leak.

If that 35 B is like a 42 A, than the pump should have an adjustment screw you can turn on the top of the pump.

I'm new to this, but have you checked the accuracy of your gauge?

I have tried two separate gauges. Both read low. The one on there now is new.

For whatever this is worth...On my A, the crud that had built up in the screen of the oil pump had blocked the screen completely, but you would not have been able to feel it or see it without taking it out. Also had a broken oil line from the pump to the tappets - possibly by water that froze in the line just above the bottom connection. Good luck.
