I have a fan shaft leaking oil at housing support. The tractor is manual start so there are no fan pulleys like the Parts Manual. I am sure the problem can be solved by replacing packing between the governor housing and support bracket. However,I am not sure how to take apart the fan shaft assembly which has now been removed from the tractor. There are no retaining locks or keeper like the parts catalog illustration. The fan shaft end is splined, but I am not sure how the fan is secured to the shaft. I see a rubber assembly between the shaft and inner diameter of the fan. I prefer to work with the fan and not mess with the pinion gear end. How can I get the fan off the head of the assembley so that I can pull the shaft out of the forward end.

There are retainers that you have to press down that thick spring to get to. That spring is tough, s you might want to have a few guys there to help you with it. other than all the springs and keepers at the end of the fan end of the shaft, thats all I cn think of for Keepers.

Jack, the fan should have 2 locks (keepers) that hold the fan on (just like valve keepers). You will have to depress the fan towards the pinion end to expose the locks, there is a chance the fan is frozen to the splines & someone at one time removed the locks & gave up but I doubt that the fan would have stayed on if that happened. There is a big spring behind the fan that you will have to depress along with the fan (CAUTION: don't damage the fan as that rubber center fan is not available anymore). After you get the fan off the shaft MUST slide out the rear towards the pinion end.

It was just as you said. I put the gear end on a piece of plywood on the floor and pushed on the fan which compressed the spring inside the housing and the retaining keys appearred. Easy! On a non-electric tractor, the fan has a colloar the covers the shaft where the pulley assembly would otherwise go. Thanks for the help, I sure there will be others!
