Battery not getting charged.

The battery is not getting charged by the tractor when running, at least this is what it seems. There are a few things about the electrical system on my John Deere B (1950) of which I am not sure if there is something wrong or not.

-First off, it takes a while for the starter to kick over the tractor, it seems that either the starter is struggling or something as it will go then slow to a stop, go, slow to a stop. And NO I will NOT convert to a 12 volt system. Is this because my starter or starter switch is bad or is it just that the engine hasn't been broken in, or some other problem.

-Because it takes awhile to start the tractor, the battery drains a bit which I understand, but I believe that the tractor is not recharging the battery. as I always end up recharging them via a trickle charger. What could be the problem and how could I fix it?

Thanks,

Karl

Karl, it could be poor corroded battery or ground connections, weak battery, and the terminals on those starter posts against the starter switch can get carboned up and pitted also. The armature in the starter could be groundign out due to worn bushigns also. On 6 volt systems, you need large battery cables and good grounds and battery connections. Check all that and if u need more help troubleshootinh the generator post back and we will help you. Ol John T Engineer in Indiana

Karl,
It seems like you and I are on almost the same schedule, as far as these problems with our old "B"s go. First of all, I am no expert, but I have received expert advice from Clooney and Gerald. I will try to pass on some of that now. I'd like to be able to send you to the posts that deal with this, but am not sure how to do that. Try the search feature, it may help you.
It is my understanding that it is hard for a generator to charge a battery if the tractor is only run for short periods of time. That is a normal condition that we just have to live with...when I start my tractor up and run around my backyard for 15 minutes, my battery will not have a chnace to get charged, so each start-up drains the battery a little more. At Deka battery, they told me to put a trickle charge on the battery once a month to prolong battery life. If my $23 battery lasts me a year under those conditions, I can live with that. I won't be converting to 12 volts either, although I can tell you for certain that if I needed this tractor to make a living, I would convert TODAY! An alternator, it seems, is a much more efficeint way to charge a battery. Anyway, try and find those posts by Clooney and Gerald, I have them and will fax them to you if you have that capability. The information is invaluable, but I imagine they are getting tired of responding to the same questions all the time. (They also addressed how to determine if your generator is functioning correctly.) It takes time to type this all out. Scroll back till you find it, if you can't find it let me know.
good luck, keep me posted.
Gary

Well my 2 cents worth, you can convert to 12V and it will still look just like the 6 volt. Just put a Generator and volt reg off the Model A. I don't care much for Alternators either. Russ

First thing I would do is pull the starter, and check the bushing that the brushes are in. This easy, 2 bolts and pull the end cap off. Next I would check the starter switch contacts . Next I would make sure the rod is putting plently of pressure on the switch. As for the charging, is the Ammeter showing a reading to the [+ side? If not the generator system must be repaired. Not witstanding all this if you have a good battery and good connections you should be able to start this tractor for a week with no generator working.Russ

Fasten the ground wire to one of the starter bolts. This will do more good than anything
