I have a 60JD that has broken 2 flywheels in 6 months. They both cracked from the center splines outward. The splines on the clutch hub also sheared off when the second flywheel cracked.Could a bad rod bearing cause this? What other problems do I need to be looking for?

Hayboy are setting the flywheel end play when you replace the flywheels. five thousands is max.end play. Sounds like the crank might be dancing back and forth.Remove flywheel and thrust collar housing and remove thrust washer and inspect it if not broken replace cork seal, and take some duct tape and make a gasket like shim on the thrust washer that faces flywheel replace housing, then go to the clutch side and wrap a chain around axle across the end of crankshaft end and tie chain off up next to generator then tap the crankshaft toward flywheel side the put a boomer on chain to hold crankshaft over while you are installing the flywheel.be sure to line up that key on backside of flywheel with notch in thrust washer then slam flywheel toward engine pretty hard, the duct tape will give you the proper clearnce, then tighten flywheel bolts. One other thing what kind of shape are the splines on flywheel side in ,if they are bad worn you could be cracking flywheel when you tighten bolts down, also I use a generious dose of loctite when I put on a flywheel,my theory is it will help absorb some of the shock and keep from wearing the splines,if you have to remove the flywheel for some reason just apply a little heat and the locktite will turn loose, hope this spill helps you or don't get bored reading it .
