Your owners manual has a pretty good description of how, and it has pictures.

It seemed to me that on my grandpas B John Deere, you took the cover off, removed some cotter pins, and tighten something, i can't remember, is it the same with the A?

Engage clutch lever and tighteneach of the sloted nuts a flat at a time.Tighten sloted nuts until clutch goes into engaged position with a snap. A pull from 70 to 90 pounds should be required on end of lever to engage clutch.

You push the clutch lever forward to engage the clutch. The nut has 6 sides a flat is one of those 6 sides.
