I'm working on a 41 B that only wants to run on one cylinder. I have replaced the Plugs, Points, Condenser and Distributor cap and even made a new set of wires. Still only runs on the left cylinder. If I short out the left plug the right cylinder will fire. I did a compression test and I have 75 lbs on both. I have pulled the valve cover and the tappets needed some adjusting, I set them for .020, Still only runs on the left side. When I first start her up she will hit on both for about 3 seconds. I'm overlooking something real simple, I'm hoping you all can help me.

One thing you might try is a different type of spark plug. I improved the idle on my 1940 B by changing to a champion W89D. Of course it still doesn't idle like a well-tuned 50.

Charlie, does it hit on both under load? If so you are probably going to have to live with it. Because of the 180*-540* firing of a J.D. 2 cylinder the L/H cylinder fires, then 180* later the R/H cylinder fires then it coasts for 540*. Under low & no load conditions the throttle is only open a small amount & most of the fuel/air it passes through is used by the L/H cylinder & what little is left is then used by the R/H cylinder. During the 540* coast cycle the intake manifold will fill again to deliver a full charge to the first firing L/H cylinder. On later numbered series tractors J.D. addressed that problem by going to a 2bbl carb with a separate fuel metering circuit for each side. Sometimes you can help the old single carb tractors to pull on both cylinders at low load by richening the idle mixture, retarding the timing & replacing the throttle plate & throttle shaft bushings to keep the mixture un-diluted & keep ALL the intake air going by the idle ports & not leaking around the ends or the plate where it can't pick up fuel.. Also make sure you don't have a vacuum leak on the R/H cylinder & the intake valve guide isn't worn on the R/H cylinder (allows the R/H cylinder to suck air at high vacuum conditions).
