rebuilt the dual touchomatic on my 40T. all new seals and gaskets. works fine, the rockshafts were in great shape. leaks oil (i use straight 10w) out both rockshafts, much worse on the left(dual) side. should i drain out a pint or so and see if the leak goes away? it appears to me that the rockshaft housing should not be under any pressure. the full petcock is just about at the same level as the bottom of the shafts. or do i have to pull it all apart again (groan) and reseal it? thanks in advance guys

I think rockshaft leaks are normal on on all
Debuke built tractors.Know a guy who spent
$700.00 getting a 420 rockshaft rebuilt,and
it still leaks.The last one I did with dual
touchomatic I install 3 seals in the left
housing,it hasn't leaked yet.

There are three locations on the rockshaft that make contact to the casting, left, center, and right sides. Were these areas worn? The right side seems to wear more than the others. If they are worn down this causes the shaft to drop, making the seals useless. The seal is held in place by the casting and if the shaft is lower than normal, oil leaks around the oblong hole now present around the shaft/seal.

I've taken a shaft to the machine shop and had them weld up the right side, where mine was worn the worst, and had them turn it down to 2". It stopped leaking. Not everyone will weld it as the heat may warp the shaft and make it untrue. It would be very hard to turn it down and put in a sleeve because that would effect the splines on the end of the shaft.

Those seals are very small and easily damaged when installing. I use an old ring compressor to carefully put the seal into place.

Have to ask this;
Did you put new retainers and seals on the rock shafts when you reinstalled them? Check the control settings including the depth control stop. I have manuals and could send you a couple pages via email if you want, contact me. Bob
