I have a 1948 B John Deere. On a chilly damp day the carburetor will frost and cause the tractor to run erratically. Is there a way to stop this from happening? Thanks for any help.

My dad was the first owner of a '47 B with the same problem. Dealer put a warmer manifold on it, and we had little trouble after that. Yeah, I know, good luck finding one. I am telling you this, more to let you know it was a fairly common problem on that model.

We used to use cornpicker side shields on a 49 A (loader tractor) with cardboard... That kept it warm enough to not frost. Probably not practical if you've got a good looking tractor...

Don, that seems to be a common problem on lettered series. If it is worked hard enough or the engine temp is kept high it doesn't seem to be a problem. I have seen different ways of handling the problem & most include some type of tin shield built around the carb to keep the carb warm with exhaust heat. I have an old J.D. B I use around the property, to keep the driveway & road graded, & to generally abuse & although I get frost that appears on the carb once in a while it causes no running problems. The shutters are still operational & I keep the engine temp around 190* when using it. If all you do is play with it you probably could put an all-fuel exhaust manifold on (if it has a gasoline manifold now) & then have plenty of carb heat. The more you open the throttle plate the less frost you will have.
