My model 50 is missing the heat sheild under the
gas tank. Is this really necessary?

Mike, the A, B & other letered series didn't use them & even some all-fuel numbered series didn't. I don't have any parts manuals at my present location so can't look to see if early 50 or 50 all-fuel used a heat shield. That shield was put on to keep the fuel in the tank from boiling after LONG, HARD hours of heavy pulling in hot weather. If you don't pull it hard for long periods, don't live in an extremly hot area & use pump gasoline you shouldn't need one. If at any time you hear the fuel boiling in the tank you will have to add one. One good thing, due to emission laws the pump gasoline of today has a higher boiling point than years ago.

I suspect that without the heat shield a tractor that is working hard for a couple of hours would run into a problem well before the gas in the tank was at the boiling point. I'd bet vapor lock would set in sooner. Of course, that would force the tractor to sit and cool off for a while - kind of a self-limiting problem.

Pete, I know the 60's had them & can't remember seeing them on the A's. If you say the late A's do they must have been added late on the A's. The late A was pretty close to a 60 anyway.
