A couple of A questions

Couple of quick ones:

That wheel-wobble question made me think of one:

Can I put shims under my steering sector gear (styled "A" 1946) to make the worm gear engage on a lower portion of the sector? My front wheels wobble too, and I've eliminated any problem other than lash (play) in the sector/worm gear. The lands on the sector are worn pretty deep where they engage the worm gear, and there's an eccentric bushing that I can turn to put the sector closer to the worm, but I don't think this would solve the problem. Maybe move the sector back a bit and raise it up with shims...?

Also, I'm thinking about adding a three-point hitch conversion to the old A. I'd like to keep it original, but I'm afraid I won't be able to find the old implements to match the power-lift and drawbar system on my tractor. The antique tractor market around here seems to be for people who see these things as big toys, and want to gussie them up as expensive lawn ornaments. Asking where I can find a blade, two-bottom plow, seed drill, harrow, etc. for this tractor draws a lot of blank stares. What would you do? The 3-point route seems a lot more practical and cost-effective in the long run. I don't have time to poke around farm auctions, unfortunately...

thanks in advance-

chris

Sir-I bought a used 3 pt. for my 1950 "A" from Shorty Deere. I also have a blade-finish mower-box blade and sub soiler that I use a lot. I bought my implements from the local farm & ranch store that sells King Kutter brand. These are good implements at a good price. Go to www.KingKutter.com and check the, out. JIM

What size mower did you get and how do you like it? I was going to get a 7' King Kutter but after missing getting it on a regular shipment to our Ranch & Home store I ended up with a 7' Farm King through our New Holland dealer. It seems well built and was even $100 less. My blades are King Kutter.

I have a '49 A. I built my own 3-point hitch and use it with a blade for snow in winter and a finish mower in summer. I also used it with a box blade when I was getting my yard ready to seed and a subsoiler when planting sprinklers. I'm also thinking about getting one of those big 3-point fertilizer spreaders. That'd be cool.

I think the 3-point opens up your options as far as implements go. I look at the hitch itself as a mounted implement that serves as an adapter to other implements. Heck, you can always take it off later if you want.

If you can cut, drill, and weld, you can build your own hitch. You can also buy one that'll fit your tractor and bolt it on.

Hi Chris,

Regarding implements for your A. You might visit some neighbors about the implements you want. If they don't have them, they'll know someone who will. It will take some time but maybe not as much as auctions. Otherwise, if you have money to spend, you can go to these new, "WalMartized" farm stores like Tractor Supply or Country General. They have all kinds of three point implements but you'll pay a premium compared to the older, better built stuff you'd get from neighbors and auctions. I have some of both (farm store and antique).

As for the steering problem, someone else will have to give that a go.

Have fun, Jon
