I have one or more small pinhole leaks in a 1937 B gas tank. They appear to be directly over the location of the rear tank support pad. Does anyone have any experience making a tank repair from the outside - ie., without using an internal tank sealer? Will JB Weld hold against gasoline?? Is there some product actually manufactured specifically for external tank repair?? Any other ideas?? Thanks!

JB Weld does hold up to gas. I've seen a couple automotive tanks patched with it and did one myself in my truck. I've even used JB Weld inside carburetors. No problems. I use regular JB Weld, not the quick weld, though I don't know that it wouldn't work as well. Good luck.

Have you tried brazing the tank? I've heard it working on a Chevy truck gas tank.

I had a gas tank repaired on a 620. The radiator shop used a coating that made a lining inside and it worked perfect. Cost about $100. I don't know if you can go much with pin holes.

John, the best repair is to pull the tank, purge it, fill it with water & solder the pin holes. About anything else tried from the outside will not hold up long & you don't want a change in temperature that expands the tank a little to cause a gasoline leak & burn your shop or barn down. If you don't want to do it yourself most radiator shops will do it for a reasonable amount. It only takes a few minutes to pull the tank on an unstyled J.D. tractor.

Don't fill it all the way to the hole. Just kidding.Gas tanks can be welded. And I have seen holes fixed with fillers, although they aren't as successful.
