Wasn't it typical to change the polarity to negative ground when making this conversion? I have a friend working on a Allis Chalmers D14 who says it was converted to 12 volt but still has a positive ground.
As always, any input will be appreciated.

Gary, if you are keeeping a generator system then there is no reason to change polarity. If you are converting to an alternator unless you obtain a costly positive ground alternator you will have to change to negitive ground as most (not all) alternators require a negitive ground system.

Clooney,
That is quite interesting, and kind of ties in with a question I asked about on Rummy's page about why use an alternator when 12 volt generators are available.
These are not hypothetical questions, I am thinking aobut converting my '48 to a 12 volt system, and I am trying to help out a friend who is having trouble with the starting system on a 6 -12 volt conversion on an Allis Chalmers (I am REALLY going out on limb we get to ACs, all I know about them is that you need to take yoga classes to be able to get in the seat). As usual, the more I learn, the less I know.
It gets to be more fun all the while!
Thanks again
