My tractor isn't charging like it should. When it is idling the voltage meter is reading zero and at full rpm's 10 volts, dose my generator need to be rebuilt?

I agree with Clooney. If your battery is up and assuming you run your A enough to keep to expect to keep it up, things sound OK to me. If you just really want to get into your generator, the old units are pretty easy to work on and really don't require much as long as the winding and bearings are in good shape. New brushes and cleaning things up a bit can improve performance or at least make you feel better. Check your regulator too. You can adjust the charge rate somewhat from there. Try to find an older general auto repair book or electrical system book from the 1950's or earlier. They're a great source of info. on older technology, repair and trouble shooting that you can't get in newer publications. Good luck.

Ron, are you talking volts or amps here? The 52A doesn't come with a volt meter it comes with an amp gauge. If you are talking volts you have a charging/electrical problem, if you are talking amps you are probably within the proper charging range for the generator. Because of the 0 volts & 10 volts readings you gave us ( those numbers would be hard to obtain with any battery system) I believe you are refering to amps as those numbers would be obtainable on a tractor system.
