working on a 530 and changing over to negative ground. Naturally you have to switch the ammeter poles and repolarize the regulator but does anyone know if the gas gauge leads have to be reversed.

Chuck, you want to polorize the generator not the regulator as there is nothing in the regulator that needs polorizing. That fuel gauge is a good question though. I don't believe you can reverse the fuel gauge leads as the present ground is used by the sender & gauge to move the needle. Having never tried it myself I would caution you be very sure in what you are doing if you try to reverse those fuel gauge leads as that dash gauge is not available from Deere in an original looking form & an original is very hard to come by.

thanks for comment, have polarized gerators in the past, no problem there, however in checking gas gauge, tank or wire not hooked up gauge goes over full tilt. However when grounding wire to frame, gauge does not register. Guess I can hook up to tank and turn tank over/upside down and see if I get reading like out of gas. Looks like the gauge wire would need reversing though...as it is a grounding type device....any comments appreciated....

I work with level senders all the time. Most senders are just a variable resistor. As the fuel level goes down the resistance changes. It doesn't make any difference which side is ground the resistance will be the same.

The sender doesn't matter what the ground polarity
is but the gauge does. There is no practial reason
I can think of to not run positive ground the way
the tractor was intended to be.The only one I
can think of is if your fuel gauge doesn't work
and you must have one and you don't want to pay
John Deere's outragous price for one that doesn't
look right. You can buy an after market neg.ground
setup at most autoparts stores that will work.
