If one wishes to "stroke" a JD 2 cyl, horiz or vert, or even 4 or 6, for that matter, is there a good source to describe the easiest crank interchanges? For example, do any D cranks (500 cid, right?) fit any Gs (416 cid)? If none will drop in, then, which take the least machine work? Don't laugh, I know more about Chevy V8s than JD, and you can do a lot of interchanges on them without heading to the machine shop, first.
Also, is there any source for those cast iron rings (they occupy about 5-10 cid at the top of the block--combustion chamber) that you drive into the top of the cylinder and lock via a special sparkplug hole device? Does anyone know what I am talking about? They were sold from FarmJournal/SuccessfulFarming magazines in the 40s and 50s. I saw a set sized for a propane engine at a show once, but I didn't have mic, so I left them. Are they as rare as I think they are? It looks like it wouldn't be that difficult to machine your own from aluminum billet, though getting the valve relief and flow might be tricky. It is time for you pullers that have tried this cheap and sneaky high compression trick to come clean--and share, OK?

There are several old D's that were changed over to LP gas that have the high compression donuts in them. I have one set for a model D now that I will sell.

I was able to come across a pair of the inserts you are talking about. They came out of a A 1946 I believe.I have been collecting a few of these parts for my A.As of changeing cranks I'm not able to help.
