Just finished cutting the grass with my bush hog and I noticed that air was leaking from around the valve stem on one of the rear tires. The previous owner had just put new tires on this MT and there dosen't appear to be much rust at all around the stems. The tires still have the extra nubs of rubber, but I suppose the valve stems could be old. Could it just be a bad valve stem? Perhaps a crack in the rubber of the stem? yes? no? (BTW, I don't know if there was ever any calcium in these tires, just in case you were going to ask me that question, but I only see a little bit of surface rust arougn the stem)

Can I just pull this stem out and pop in a new one? Can I get a new valve stem at any autoparts store or are these specail in some way.

Any advice would be greately appreciated on how to fix this valve stem.

I'm a fellow MT owner. I haven't had a flat yet, but when I repainted the wheels last year, I broke the beed loose to mask the tire. Hate yellow on a black tire. Mine has tubes, and I realized that when the time came, it wouldn't be that hard to change out the tube. Also I rid my tractor roaming area of all thorn producing plant life.

If you are trying to work on the tire yourself, make sure you have the valve stem at the top of the tire rim, most of the stems are two piece and I replaced the inner part of the stem with a part from farm and home, with the tube at the top, you wont lose any calicum if you have that in your tires,

If the liquid is coming out between the rim and the stem it won't do any good to replace the center part of the stem. Sounds like the tube has a puncture. Need to take it out and patch it or replace with a new tube

To prevent future leaks there are a couple of options. Some 12+ ply lumber jack skider tires or fill them with foam. The foam will add a little weight but make the tire somewhat stiffer with a little less traction. Commonly used on construction equipment to reduce down time. Safety too, no fun when the man lift you are on starts to lean due to a flat tire.

Your MT should have tubes in it. Therefore, you can't just replace the valve stem. The previous owner may have put new tires on and re-used the old tubes, not likely, but possible. More than likely if this was done recently, you have a tube pinched between the tire and bead and the tube is leaking. The hole around the valve stem just happens to be a good place for the air to come out. A tire store that does tractor tires can repair it for you if you dont want to take on breaking down the tire, removing the tube, and trying it yourself.

I was cutting with the bush hog is some heavy brush. Is it possible that I punctured the inner tube with a mesquite torn and the air is not leaking through the point of entry, but between the tire and the tube and exiting around the valve? And if this is the case, would some of that leak stop goop help? Or is this theory improbable or impossible?

Thanks for your help!

Do yourself a favor. Get it fixed right the first time then you won't have to worry about it.

more than likely you have a small hole in tube if air is comming from under valve stem only way to fix is to take it apart to fix it properly. not a hard job just time consuming.
