Here's a hypothetical situation, this old guy has a JD B and he's not really cheap but he doesn't like to get ripped off either. He needs a muffler and a pulley brake lining for his B. The muffler from JD is $46 vs. $17 at Quality Farm and the brake is $27 from JD and $9 at Quality fleet. Now, should this poor old man spend the extra money on genuine JD parts or are the aftermarket parts of acceptable quality. Thanks for your advice.

I have a Deere muffler on my 43 B. She barks and is loud for a B. Compared to what I hear at shows. Buy a Deere part. Just my 2 cents worth.

Wilson, the Q.F.F. muffler is probably made by stanley & won't sound very good, the muffler from Deere is probably an import will sound better and is probably a little thicker metal. The pulley brake from Deere is probably a little better quality but not 3 times better & the pulley brake from Q.F.F. has a little thinner metal in the tabs. In the old days qenuine J.D. parts were the best out there, now in many cases J.D. has subbed many old 2 cyl. parts to cheaper imports, small job shop built & non-original looking replacments. Seals are a good example, in many cases the old original 2 lipped spring backed seal has been subbed to a thin shaft wearing single lip seal.

Wilson, the aftermarket muffler will likely be a copy of Deere's "economy" muffler that was a replacement muffler that fit, but was not original. They are the type that are necked down at the bottom. The AB2700R muffler from Deere will look right and sound right and outlast the other at least two to one, if not more. As far as the pulley brake pad goes, originally the B had a riveted lining. The metal backed pad was a Deere issued replacement that started in the early- to mid-fifties. For no more than they cost I would go with the Deere there, too. My humble opinion. Mike
