Ron,

If you find you haven't reversed any wires the generator/regulator fields probably need to be re polarized. This is called "flashing the field" and is done as follows.

With the switch off take a wire directly from the positive battery terminal to the field connection on the regulator. (If you have pos ground reverse this). This often happens when you change regulators or generators or anything unusual happens to the electrical system. I have a '56 Model 60.

Gus, I think you mis-typed what you meant. If he puts battery power to the field terminal he will fry the regulator. With the regulator installed he needs to jump battery power to the ARM terminal, with the regulator out or not hooked up he needs to ground the F (field) post on the generator & them jump power to the ARM post of the generator.

If you had the tractor forever and it is doing that, it may be the polarity of the regulator changed, or the regulator not working. If you recently re-wired it, the leads to the ammeter are probably reversed.

The tractor has the origonal wiring harness on it still and I havent touched it. How could the regulator's polarity have changed, and what do I do to fix it?

Did you replace the battery recently and accidentally get the + and - terminals reversed?
